Carriage - returning mechanism.- In mechanism of the kind comprising a pinion which is constantly in gear with the carriage rack, and can be coupled at will to a motor, coupling is effected by moving the pinion axially to bring projections thereon into engagement with projections on a member driven by the motor. A pinion 5, constantly in engagement with the carriage rack 1, is moupted loosely on a spindle 8 which carries also a loose pinion 7 driven continuously by the motor. The pinion 7 is formed with a boss 9 having screw connection with a collar 10, a spring 11 causing the collar to turn with the pinion. On actuating a carriage-returning key, an arm 12 depresses the pinion 5 in opposition to a spring 16, and a projection 17 on the pinion is brought into the path of a projection 18 on the collar 10, the pinion being thereupon rotated to effect carriage-return. The projections have inclines adapted to interlock and prevent! the spring 16 from raising the pinion 5. When the carriage is arrested, the screw connection causes the collar 10 to descend and release the projections, whereupon the springs 16, 11 restore the pinion 5 and collar 10 to the normal positions. The arm 12 is secured to an arm 15 connected to the carriage-returning key by a member which is adapted to'yield if the projection 18 obstructs the projection 17 when the pinion 5 is depressed. The carriage and the rack 1 may be connected by a yielding spring.
