Abstract
216,777. Boeken, H. J. Oct. 23, 1923. Scutching-apparatus.-In obtaining fibres from the leaves of agave and similar plants, the leaves are held or gripped at one part only, both when the flesh or pulp is removed from the middle of the leaf and also when it is removed from the ends thereof. The leaves are placed on the rope 2 Fig. 8 near their centres, carried along and gripped between the rope and the conveyer pulley 3, and the flesh removed from the middle by a beater drum 5 co-operating with a breastpiece 4. The leaves then pass to the rope 7 and are gripped at the scutched part between the rope 7 and the pulley 8, and the ends scutched by the beater drums 10, 11 co-operating with a breastpiece 12. A plate 14, Fig. 10, adjustable as to height, bends the leaves, and produces better gripping.
