Abstract
17,622. Bertin, C. L. J. Aug. 11. Breaking and scutching apparatus for ramie &c. Fig. 2 shows a plan of the machine. The green stalks are placed parallel to the inclined edge of a table 38, and fed by bands 22 to a pair of crushing-rollers 17. The ends which first escape from the rollers are gripped between a rope 28 and a pulley 2, and passed between two sets of verticallymoving scutching-blades 36 carried by endless chains. Near the point where the rope 28 leaves the pulley 2, the scutched parts of the stalks are gripped by a second rope 29 and pulley 3, and the unscutched ends are subjected to the action of a second set of scutching-blades similar to the first. The completely-cleaned stalks are carried away by the rope 29, and transferred to a set of needles 37, from which they are removed by hand.
