Abstract

18,500. Beard, J. F., and Hayne, R. Sept. 16. Breaking and scutching apparatus for vegetable leaves. The leaves l are passed transversely between a pair of corrugated crushing-rollers f, h, and gripped by a travelling chain k, which holds the butt ends thereof against the edge of a faceplate m, while the leaves are scutched or scraped by scrapers u on the face of a wheel t. The leaves are first scraped on one side against a fixed plate x, and are subsequently turned upwards by the revolving scrapers so that they have their other sides scraped against the faceplate m. When the leaves are released from the chain k and faceplate m, they are transferred by an endless rope 7 across the pulley 3, and the ends which have been scutched are straightened by a travelling carding- belt and gripped between an endless rope 10 and the edge of a second faceplate 15 similar to m, while the untreated ends are scraped by a revolving scraper 17 similar to t, after which the fully-cleaned leaves are delivered from the machine between the endless bands or ropes 20 and 10 as shown. In a modification, the leaves are passed completely through the machine, while gripped or held at their butt ends, two faceplates and scrapers being used as described above, the leaves being transferred from one set to the other across the wheel 3 by an endless rope.
