Gas &c., supplying by meter. - Prepayment mechanism for gas, water, electricity or like meters is mounted between two plates 1, 2, Fig. 2, and comprises a nut 26, Fig. 3, travelling on a screw 28 and adapted to engage a block 29 which slides on cross-rods 5, 6 and has an arm 31 to operate the valve lever or the like. The nut is rotated, on prepayment, by a slotted drum 25 passing through a flange on the nut and connected by gears 24, 11 to an operating handle 12. The screw 28 is rotated to close the valve &c. by the counting- mechanism of the meter. Indicators.-The amount of gas &c. prepaid but unconsumed is indicated by a pointer 30 on the sliding block 29. Coin action, mechanical-connection.- A coin M passes through a slot 14 in a pawl 13 into a slot in a drum 7 on the spindle 9 of the handle 12, and, when the handle is turned, is pressed against a curved portion 15 of the pawl to lift it and clear a lateral projection 16 from a lug 17 on the drum. Backward rotation of the drum is prevented by the nose of the pawl engaging a ratchet wheel 10. Coin-discharging mechanism.-When the drum has made a half-revolution, the coin drops out. If the coin jams, it is pushed out by a knife edge on a pin 19, which is fastened to the plate 2, projecting into a slot 18 on the drum in the path of the coin.
