Electricity, gas, and liquids, supplying by meter; savings' boxes; price-changing mechanism. -Prepayment mechanism applicable for the delivery of gas, electricity, &c. or the maintenance of the running of a savings' clock or the like, is shown fitted to the works of an ordinary alarm clock. A screwed spindle C, Fig. 1, is mounted between plates A, B attached to the frame a of the clock and the casing respectively, and is given one revolution, for each coin inserted, by a handle D, causing a nut E to move along the screw. The nut is fitted with a revoluble ring k carrying a pin l engaging a bar K, which is withdrawn from the arm 3 of a lever P and allows a spring 8 to remove a locking arm 6 on the lever from the balance 7. In the case of a meter, the arm K is connected to a valve, switch, &c. The nut is returned to stop the clock by a wheel 0 of the clockwork fitted with pins y acting against a spring-pressed slide N which carries a strip M to turn a gear-wheel H step by step, the rotation of the gear wheel being transmitted to the nut by pins h thereon passing through the nut. The time required for the return of the nut may be regulated or varied by varying the number of pins in the wheel 0. Coin action, mechanical-connection. - A coin inserted through a slot r into a. pocket q on a disc F secured to the spindle C by a pin c bears against and raises the hooked end p, Fig. 3, of a pawl L, which prevents backward rotation of a ratchetdisc G, from a pin o on the ratchet-disc so that the spindle C may be given one complete forward turn. The ratchet-disc G is loose on the spindle and has a pin-and-slot connection d, e with the disc F, a, spring f normally holding the pin d of the disc F at the rear end of the slot e so that the pocket q is under the insertion slot r.
