Electricity and gas, supplying by meter; savings' boxes; coin action, multiple-coin. - In coin-actuated starting and stopping mechanism for apparatus having its own driving means and provided with at least one revoluble shaft, such as automatic gas and like meters, clocks for collecting insurance premiums, &c., the shaft 1 has a ratchet wheel 3 provided with threaded pins 5 adapted to drive two loose gear wheels 8, 9 normally held by a spring pawl 11. The wheel 8 through a pin 20 and slotted lever 17 reciprocates a sliding gate 14 which transfers coins one at a time from a receptacle 12 to a coin duct 21 where each coin is supported by the upper end 25 of a lever 24 pivoted to a bracket 22 on the side of the duct. The end 25 enters a slot 26 in the duct and is held in this position by an arm 28 on the lower end of the lever 24 until this arm enters notches 30, 32 in discs 29, 31 carried by the gear wheel 9, and so allows the coin to drop. The notches are normally out of register and the arm 28 holds the disc 29 until the wheel 9 advances the disc 31 against the action of a spring for the notches to coincide. When the coin drops it hits the lower end of the lever 24 which has entered the duct 21, rocking it about its pivot and freeing the arm 28 from the notches, the disc 29 being then immediately moved by the spring to cover the notch 32 for another revolution of the gear wheel 9. The lever 24 carries an arm 33 for operating a locking and releasing device, so that the clockwork or the like is stopped when there is no coin in the gate 14. The time between two successive deliveries of a coin from the gate 14 to the duct 21 may be varied by varying the number of pins. 5 in the ratchet wheel 3.
