Coin action, mechanical-connection and thrust; fraud, preventing.-In a prepayment device for a gas or other quantity meter' the coin pocket comprises two flanged plates 6, carrying an intermediate plate 9 by means of a pin-and-slot connection 11, 10 and a spring-pressed catch 7 which assists the insertion of a coin through a coin slot 4 arranged on a chord of the price disc 3. The inserted coin depresses the plate 9 so that its projection 12 engages a ratchet wheel 13 operating the valve cam. The flanges 26 on the coin pocket prevent the insertion of a coin in the slot 4 except when the coin pocket and slot register. The coin pocket is rotated by a handle on a spindle 17 which is in relatively non-rotatable engagement with the flanges 26. The handle consists of a boss 14 having wings 15 connected by a web 16, the connection between the boss and the spindle being formed by a ball 24 which is pressed by a spring 22 arranged in the spindle into one of two recesses 25 in the boss according to the direction in which the handle is being turned. A period of lost motion in which the web 16 is moved to cover the coin slot partially or wholly thus occurs when the handle is first turned after the insertion of a coin. The handle is held against the price plate by a spring 18 interposed between a nut 19 on the spindle, and the flanges 26.
