Abstract
215,478. Cheney, C. W. Feb. 22, 1923. Attaching spiked plates and the like.-The fastening devices for bags, purses, attachÚ-cases and the like are provided with sharp prongs and are attached to the bags &e. by a tool comprising two members reciprocated by a common plunger, one for pressing the leather or like material on the prongs to cause their penetration and the other for clenching the protruding prongs. The plunger j carries a block i to which are rigidly connected punches i<2>, i<3>, i<4> or as many as there are prongs f on the fastening device e. The other member h has rods n, o held in sliding engagement with the block i by slots q and screws r. A strong spring m abutting against the block i and member h keeps the member h in its forward position, and the punches i<2>, i<4> move in openings h<2> in the member h. The fastening devices e are laid on the fixed die g with the hasps or like in recesses and the prongs f pointing upwards. The plunger j is moved downwards after the leather &c. l has been placed over the prongs, the member h, by reason of the strong spring m, presses on the leather, causing the sharp prongs f to penetrate. Continued downward motion of the plunger j causes the member m to continue to grip the leather and hold it in place while the punches i<2>, i<4> clench the prongs as shown in Fig. 3.
