Attaching spiked plates, strips, and the like.-A machine for attaching notched studs forming one of the fastening elements of bags, purses, and the like, has a bed d with a transversely sliding part f formed with a hole e to receive the stud. and an upright back part d<2>. The reciprocating punch i carries a six-sided disc i, the sides forming a series of differently-shaped punches for differentsized studs. Each side has a hole o to fit in the peg q for securing the punch in correct position by the screw n. In action, the stud member a<40> carried by the U-shaped plate a is placed on the bed f with the stud in the hole e and the leather or other material c placed between the limbs of the U-shape. A treadle or handle then moves the arm x away from the rod h, allowing the bed f to move outwards under the. action of its spring g to bring the base of the U-shape firmly against the upright d<2>, accurately positioning the stud member. Further movement of the treadle or handle causes the punch member j to descend and the appropriate side of the punch i clenches the prongs through the leather.
