396,726. Attaching pronged fastening-elements. CHENEY, C. W., Factory Road, Soho, Birmingham. Jan. 9, 1932, No. 655. [Class 89 (iii).] A machine for attaching pronged lock elements &c. to attache cases &c., is provided with two or more sets of attaching tools so that two or more elements can be attached simultaneously. The tools are readily adjustable and interchangeable, to provide for varying the positioning of the elements on the case and for attaching elements of varying sizes. Two tools l which hold lock elements with their prongs upwards are fixed to slides i which are adjustable along a table a. The slides are held in adjusted position by latches m engaging notches a<2> in the table, and by clamping screws n. Upper-tools i are similarly adjustable along a bar f which is attached to a plunger d slidable in a vertical guideway e. Each tool i comprises a sleeve i<4> which is a close fit on the bar f and carries pegs i<5>, and a plate i<6> which is carried by a yoke i<7> slidable on the sleeve i<4> against the action of a spring i<8>. In use, lock elements are placed in the tools l and the material of a case is placed over the upturned prongs of the elements and positioned by adjustable side and back gauges o<2>, r. The plunger d is then forced down by linkage from a treadle. The plate i<6> first causes the prongs to penetrate the material and then, the springs i<8> yielding, the pegs i<5> clinch the prongs. The tools can readily be adjusted by means of the notches a<2>, and can be removed endwise from the table and plunger bar, for replacement bv others of a different size.
