This invention relates to a die for ornamenting parts of shoe uppers.
An object of this invention is to provide a die for ornamenting shoe uppers such as a shoe vamp which is adjustable for different sizes of shoes, and which will ornament such different sizes with equal facility.
Another object of the invention is to provide a die for ornamenting shoe uppers with separate die and gage sections and with means for varying the spacing between the sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel and eflicient means for securing die and gage sections to a base, which means are readily operable to release or look such sections, thus facilitating the use of interchangeable die and gage sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a sectional die of the character described, a single means for both latching and adjusting the spacing of separate die sections.
Other and specific objects will be apparent from the following detail description taken in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a die embodying the invention.

(Cl. 164-413) i riage, whereby the tools maybe spaced by movement of the carriage and the die thereby ad? justed for different sizes of shoes. Thus a gage section 4 and a die section 5 are positioned on the base 1 and die sections 6 and 7 are positioned on the carriage. Latching means are provided whereby movement of the carriage will latch all of the sections l, 5, 6 and 7 in position, the sections 4: and 5 being retained in fixed position with relation to the base and the sections 6 and Z being moved with the carriage and, therefore, in relation to the gage section 4 and the die section 5.
In the embodiment specifically shown in the drawings the gage and die are constructed for operation on Vamps of ladies shoes, the gage being an abutting plate for the throat of the vamp, and the cutting members on the section 5 being adapted to make perforations near the seam line. The die section 7, as specifically illustrated in the drawings, is adapted to ornament the toe portion and the die section 6 is adapted to place ornamentations on the vamp adjacent the toe. The arrangement is such that the device may, by Inanipulation, perform the necessary work on shoe parts for different sized shoes by moving the carriage while at the same time the entire assembly is thereby securely locked in position.
The base includes side rails 8 and 9, a rear cross member 10, intermediate cross member 11, and an arcuate end piece 12, secured together in a permanent rigid fashion.
The carriage 2, which is mounted for reciprocation on the base 1, comprises side members 13 and 14;, a rear end member 15 and a front end member 16. Slots 1'7, furrowed to provide inwardly extending flanges 18, are provided in each of the carriage frame members 13, 14, 15 and. 16. Pins or screws 19 are passed through slots 1'7, are secured to the frame 1 and have their heads engaging the inwardly extending flanges 18. Thus the carriage is mounted for reciprocation along the base and is secured thereto.
The cam lever 3 is pivoted to the bar 11 of the base 1 by the appropriate screw 19. VA crank pin 20 secured to the lever 3 engages in a slot 21 in the front end member 16 of the carriage. The details of the cam lever 3 and its relationship with the base 1 and the carriage 2 can best be understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 5. 105
The arcuate member 12 carries a dial, preferably marked in sizes and half sizes, and cooperating with a pointer 22 on the lever 3 in such a manner that the operator may readily adjust the device for the size required. Appropriate sockets 23 are placed in the upper surface of the arcuate member 12 to cooperate with a detent 24, depending from and carried by a leaf spring 25, which is secured by pins 26 to the lever 3. The outer end of the spring forms the pointer 22. A socket 27 adapted to also cooperate with the detent 24 is formed in the upper face of the arcuate member 12 preferably adjacent a notation open.
It will now be understood that when the lever is moved to open position, as shown in Fig. 3, the carriage will be so positioned with reference to the base or frame 1 that the sections 4, 5, 6 and '7 may be placed in proper position. Then the lever 3 is moved to a position corresponding to thesize of shoe for which the work is to be done. The gage section 4 and the die section 5 will be retained in their original position but the die sections 6 and '7 will be moved relative thereto. The means for latching the sections and for position.-
ing them with respect to the base or carriage will now be explained.
By particular reference to- Figs. 3 and 8 to 11, the means for positioning the die section 5 on the base 1 will be explained. Two pins 28 (there being one on each side) depend from a base 29 of the die section 5 and each has a cross pin 30 on its head. The head of the pin 28 with the cross pin 30 is adapted to engage in a suitable socket 31 in the side member 8 (or 9) of the base 1. Longitudinal slots 32 in the side members 13 and 14 accommodate the shanks of the pins 23 and permit the carriage to be operated when the pins 28 are in their sockets as described, and a lateral slot 33' accommodates the cross pin 30 when the pin 28 is inserted in position, as will be seen from Fig. 3, where the frame is in open position. But when the lever 3 is moved, the carriage will be moved and the side members 13 and 14 will, by engagement with the cross pin 30, hold the die section 5 in position on the base.
The means for positioning and. latching the gage section 4 may now be described and explained. Dowel pins 34 (see Fig. 2) extend upwardly from a lower plate 29:! of the base 29 of the die section 5 and engage in appropriate holes, not shown, in a base plate 35 of the gage section 4.
A. pin 36 depends from the base plate 35- and has in its head a cross pin 37, which forms a part of the latching means for the gage section. A lug or extension 38 extends forwardly from the cross member 15 of the carriage and has a longitudinal slot 39, to accommodate the shank of the pins 36, and a lateral slot to accommodate the cross pin 37 (see Figs. 2 and 3). Thus, the die section 5 may be positioned, when the frame is in open position as shown in Fig. 3, by passing the pin 36 with its cross head 37 through. the slots 39 and 40 of the extension 38. 4 is positioned by the dowel pins 34 on the die section 5, the carriage may be advanced by the lever 3 to the position as shown in Fig. 2 causing the forwardly extending lugs 38 to engage the cross pin 37 and thus. securely latch the gage section in position.
By particular reference to Figs. 3, 6 and '7, details of the latching mechanism for the die sections 6 and '7 will be explained. Each of these sections has a base plate 41, from which depends on each side a pin 42 with a cross pin 43 in its head. The side rails 13 and 14 of the carriage each have holes 44 adapted to fit the shank of a pin 42. A groove 45 is cut in each of the side rails 8 and 9 of the base and with a cover plate or strip 46 forms a rabbet to provide a space for the reciprocation of the head of the pins 42. A

space 46a left at the end of the strips 46 (Figs. 3) and a slot 4'7 permits the passage of the cross pin 43 for placing the die, as illustrated in Fig. '7, when the frame is in open position (Fig. 3). It will now be understood that when the die sections 6 and '7 are placed in position they rest upon and are movable by the carriage 2 by reason of the engagement of the pins 42 in the holes 44. When the carriage is moved from open position the sections 6 and '7 are latched in position by reason of the cover plates or strips 46 engaging the cross pin 43.
The positioning and placing of the tool sections 4, 5, 6 and. '7 will be understood from the foregoing. When the frame, including the base 1 and the carriage 2, is open, the die sections 6 and '7 may be placed in position, as described in; the preceding paragraph, by inserting the pins 42 in. the holes 44. The die section 5 may be placed in position by inserting the downwardly extending pins 23- in the socket 31. Then the gage section 4 may be placed in position with the dowel pins 34, secured to and extending upwardly from the base of the die section 5, fitting into appropriate holes or sockets in the base plate 35 of the gage section 4; and with the pins 36 extending through the slot 40 of the extension 38 on the carriage.
Then the cam lever 3 may be moved to adjust the spacing of the dies to the proper size for which the die is then intended, and at the same time latching the tool sections in place. The gage section 4 and the die section 5 will be held stationary relative to the base 1 but the die sections 6 and '7 will be moved with the carriage- By reason of the latching means heretofore described all of the sections 4, 5, 6 and '7 will be secured in position as soon as the lever 3 is moved away from open position by reason of the relative movement of the slots 33, 40 and 47 out of registry, thus providing engagements against the upper side of the cross pins 30, 3'7 and 43.
The details of the gage section 4 may best be understood by reference to Fig. 4. A base plate 35 is adapted to rest, when placed in position, upon the upper side of theend bar 15 of the carriage 2 and upon the upper side of the base plate 29a of the die section 5. The plate 35supports a. trimming die 48, shown in Figs. 1 and 4. A table 49 is resiliently supported by springs 50 at such a distance above the base plate as will cause it to be level with the stripper pla es or work supports of the die sections 5, 6 and '7, which will be described later. The table 49 is guided by pins 51 extending through the base plate 35in a manner which is well understood in the art. A throat gage 52 is secured to the table 49 by pins 53 and has a forwardly extending edge 54 adapted to conform to the throat of the vamp for which the device is intended to be used.
The construction of the die section 5 may be understood by reference to the detail sections, Figs. 4 and 6, taken with the plan views, Figs. 1 and 2. It includes an upper base plate 29, which carries the pins 28 and rests upon the side rails 13 and 14 of the carriage, and the lower base plate 29a which carries the dowel pins 34 and partially supports the gage section 4, as previously explained. Cutting tools 55 are secured to and supported by the base plates 29 and 29a, and a work support or stripper plate 56 is resiliently supported by springs 5'7 and guided by posts 58 above its base plates in the same manner as illustrated in the drawings in connection with gage sections 6 and '7.
The die sections 6 and 7 are similar in construction to the die sections 5, each comprising a pair of base plates above which is supported a stripper plate or work support 56 guided by posts or pins 58 and having die members secured to and supported by the base plates.
The details of construction of the die sections will be readily understood by those skilled in the art without further explanation, since they do not depart from the usual practice except by being separable from the base 1 and carriage 2 and by reason of their novel latching means, which has heretofore been described in detail.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 12, 13 and 14 is a gage section for use with die sections such as sections 6 and 7, but without the use of a die section such as 5. That is to say, the particular structure illustrated and described is adapted for use where trimming and ornamenting around the throat of the vamp is not necessary or desired. The structure includes a base 60 which is adapted to rest upon the carriage 2. Pins 28 depend from the bottom of the base plate 60, the same in construction as that already described and illustrated in detail in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 and are adapted to have their heads inserted through the slots 32 in the carriage and into the sockets 31 in the base 1. A table 61 is resiliently supported above the base 60 by the springs 62 and is guided by the posts 63. A work support 64 rests upon the table 61 and the height of the table 61 is such that the work support 64 may be on a level with the stripper plates or work supports 56 of die sections used with this gage section. The gage plate 65, similar in form and function to the gage plate 52, already described, is positioned over the work support 64 and has a gaging edge 54 for positioning the work. The work support 64 and the gage plate 65 are positioned on the table 61 by means of dowel pins 66 secured to the table and passing through appropriate holes 6'7 in the work support and holes 68 in the gage plate.
A latching mechanism for securing the work support and gage plate on the table 61 includes a resilient slide 69 having a button '70 on its end for manual engagement and operating between two guide pins 71 secured to and depending from the table 61. An upwardly extending pin 'I2 is secured to the slide 69 and has a cross head or pin '73 adapted to engage a depressed cam surface '74 on the gage plate 65. A longitudinal slot 75 and a lateral intersecting slot 76 are formed in the work support 64 to permit the passage of the head of the pin 72. A slot 7'7 of the form and extent best shown in Fig. 14 is formed in the gage plate 65 for the same purpose.
It will be understood that the gage section illustrated may be placed upon the base 1 and latched therein in the same manner as already described in connection with the die section 5.
The arrangement of the gage section illustrated, in Figs. 12-14, is such that by manipulation the slide '70, the work support 64 and the gage plate 65 may be readily released and removed for replacement by similar parts of different configuration. That is to say, when the slide 69 is moved to the right, Fig. 13, the gage plate 65 and the work support 64 may be lifted off the table 61 and other parts readily replaced, whereupon the slide 69 will securely latch the parts in assembled position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that various changes may be made in the details of construction, that parts of the invention may be used without the whole, and thatvarious additions may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
I claim:
1. A die for ornamenting shoe uppers comprising a base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool fixed on the base, a tool fixed on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby to a plurality of different selected points, and means eflective upon operation of the carriage from a single point to any other of said points to latch the second tool with respect to the carriage.
2. A die for ornamenting shoe uppers comprising a base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool fixed on the base, a tool fixed on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby to a plurality of different selected points, and means effective upon operation of the carriage from a single point to any other of said points to latch the first tool on the base. l
3. A die for ornamenting shoe uppers comprising a base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool fixed on the base, a tool fixed on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby to a plurality of different selected points, and means effective upon operation of the carriage from a single point to any other point to latch both tools in their respective positions.
4. A die for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a base, a carriage positioned and guided on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool adapted to be positioned on and secured to the base, a tool adapted to be positioned on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby to a plurality of different selected points, means on said tools cooperating with means on the base and the carriage permitting the positioning of the tools as aforesaid when the carriage is at one point and to cause said tools to be latched in their respective position when the carriage is moved to another point.
5. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination comprising a tool positioned on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, a tool adapted to be positioned on and secured relative to the base, and latching means for the last named tool comprising a pin depending from said tool and a lateral projection. from the pin, said base having a socket to receive the head of the pin and a carriage having a slot to accommodate the shank of the pin and an opening registering with the socket when the carriage is in one position to permit the insertion of the pin, whereby when the carriage is in one position the pin may be inserted or removed from the socket and when the carriage is moved to another position the pin will be latched in place and the tool thereby secured on the base.
6. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed on the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination comprising a tool positioned on the base and fixed relative thereto, a tool adapted to be positioned and secured to the 1 carriage, and latching means for the last named tool comprising a pin depending from the tool and a lateral projection from the pin, the carriage having a socket adjacent its edge and the base having a rabbet for said lateral projection adjacent said edge and said socket, and a slot registering with said socket when the carriage is in one position to permit the insertion of the pin, whereby when the carriage is in said one position the pin may be inserted or removed from the socket and when the carriage is moved to another position the pin will be latched and the tool thereby secured in place on the carriage.
'7. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination including a tool adapted to be positioned on and secured relative to the base, latching means for said tool comprising a pin depending from the tool, and a lateral projection from the pin, said base having a socket to receive the head of the pin and the carriage having a slot to accommodate the shank of the pin, and an opening registering withthe socket when the carriage is in one position to permit the insertion of the pin, a tool adapted to be positioned on and secured to the carriage, and latching means for the last named tool comprising a pin depending from the tool and a lateral projection from the pin, the carriage having a socket adjacent its edge and the base having a rabbet for said lateral projection adjacent said edge and said socket, and a slot registering with said socket when the carriageis in said position to permit the insertion of the pin, whereby when the carriageis in the said one position the tools may be inserted or removed from their place and when the carriage is moved to another position the tools will be latched in their respective places on the base and carriage.
8. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combinationcomprising a tool positioned on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, a second tool, positioning means on the base of said tool, and latching meansfor the second tool comprising a pin depending from the tool and a lateral projection fromthe pin, the carriage having a slot to accommodate the shank of the pin and an opening adapted to permit the insertion of the pin with its projection when the carriage is in one position, wherebywvhen the carriage is in said one position the pin may be inserted or removed from the carriage and when the carriage is moved to another position the pin will be latched in place and the tool thereby secured on the base.
9. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation thereto, the combination including a tool, positioning means on the base for said tool, latching means for said tool comprising a pin depending from the tool and a lateral projection from the pin, the carriage having a slot to accommodate the shank of the pin and an opening adapted to permit the insertion of the pin with its projection when the carriage is in one position, a second tool, positioning means on the carriage for said second tool, and latching means for the second tool comprising a pin depending from the tool and a lateral projection from the pin, the carriage having a socket adjacent its edge and the base having a rabbet for said projection adjacent said edge and said socket, and a slot registering with said socket when the carriage is in said one position to permit the insertion of the pin whereby when the carriage is in said one position the tools may be inserted or removed from their places and when the carriage is moved to another position the tools will be latched in their respective places on the base and carriage.
10. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination comprising a tool positioned on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, a tool adapted to be positioned on and secured to the base, positioning means on the last named tool, positioning means on the base cooperating with said positioning means on the tool, a latching member on the tool and engaging means on the carriage inoperative when the carriage is'in one position and operative to engage said latching member when the, carriage is in any other position. 3

In a die forornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination comprising a tool adapted to be positioned on the base and fixed relative thereto, atool adapted to be positioned and secured-to the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, positioning means on the last named tool, positioningmeans on'the carriage cooperating with said positioning means on the tool, a latching member on said tool and engaging means on the base inoperative when the carriage is in one position and operative-to engage said latching member when the carriage is in any other position.
12. In a die for ornamenting shoe uppers having a base and a carriage superimposed upon the base and guided for reciprocation relative thereto, the combination comprising a tool adapted to be positioned onand secured relative to the base, positioning means on the tool, positioning means on the base cooperating with said positioning means on the tool, a latching member on the tool; and engaging means on the carriage inoperative when the carriage is in one position and operative to engage said latching member when the carriage is in any other position, a tool adapted to be .positionedon and secured relative to the carriage, positioning means on said second tool, positioning meanson the carriage cooperating with said positioning means on the second tool, and engaging means on the base inoperative when the carriage is in one position and operative to engage said latching member on the second tool when the carriage is in any other position.
13;:A die for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a-base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool adapted to be positioned relative to the base, means 1 for removably latching said tool to the base, a tool adapted to be positioned relative to the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, and means for removably latching said" last named tool to the carriage.
14. A die for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a tool adapted to be positioned relative to thebase, means for removably latching said tool to the base, a tool adaptedto be positioned relative to the carriage and movable therewith and thereby, means for removably latching said last named tool to the carriage, a lever pivoted to the base for moving the carriage, a dial fixed to the base, and indicating means movable by the lever cooperating with the die.
15. In a die for ornamenting shoe parts, a gage section comprising a table resiliently supported above the base, a gage plate on the table adapted to engage and locate the work, cooperating means on the plate and table for positioning the gage, and latching means including a slidable member beneath the table and having an upwardly extending pin carrying an engaging member adapted to egage an indented portion on the top surface of the plate.
16. In a die for ornamenting shoe parts, a gage section comprising a tool resiliently supported above the base, a gage plate on the table adapted to engage and locate the work, and having a slot therethrough and an indented surface adjacent the slot, and latching means including a slidable member beneath the table, an upwardly extending pin adapted to operate in the slot and a lateral extension on the pin adapted to engage the top of said indented surface.
17. In a die for ornamenting shoe parts, a gage section comprising a table resiliently supported above a base, a work supporting plate adapted to be positioned on the table, a gage plate adapted to be positioned on the work supporting plate, positioning means for locating both the gage and work supporting plate on the table, and a latching member bearing against the lower surface of the table and the upper surface of the gage.
18. A die for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a base, a carriage positioned on the base for reciprocation relative thereto, a gage positioned relative to the base, a tool for ornamenting the Work adapted to be positioned on the carriage and movable therewith and thereby to a plurality of different eselected points corresponding to diiferent sizes of shoes for which the die is intended, and latching means for releasably securing said tool to the carriage.
