Thewpresent invention relates to shoe machinery and more particularly to a type-cinnachine adapted to form cutouts, perforationsand thewlike upon: skins, upper blanks, and fitted and =closedshoe uppers and various portions of a shoe.

Heretofore when using :a cutout machine with a fixed anvil-support,idifliculties have been encountered with certain. types. of shoes,.. because of the way designs may. be locatedonthe shoes,
or due to the manner in which the. uppers are fitted. The. present machine is adapted-for use in cut.- ting blanks from a skin, in ornamenting, cutting or perforating flat and otherwork such as upper blanks, closed or fitted uppers,-etc. It comprises-: generally a \power driven plunger cooperating with the die (in the illustrated embodiment the die is mounted'on the plunger for movement: therewith, although it might be readily-mounted independently or the plunger) and "an anvil or work support upon which'the work is positioned, this work support being shaped to provide clearance at its sides whereby a fitted upper maybe readily positioned thereon without buckling that partof the upper to be out. A suitable 'backing'mediumof paper or its equivalent is usually provided .loetween the work and the anvil, and l the anvil itself may be surfaced with materialsofter than the cutting edges of the die. Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like parts, it will be observed that the machine comprises generally a base portion 10 having an upwardly extending frame or casing portion 11 which terminates in a head portion 12, such head portion overhanging the front part of the base to provide an enclosure within which is positioned an adjustably mounted, anvil 13, as hereinafter described. Mounted for vertical reciprocating movement within the head 12 is a plunger 14 carrying a cutting die unit 15, which latter is aligned with the anvil 13. A constantly driven pulley 16, connected to any convenient source of power, serves as a mode of operating the plunger, there being a single revolution clutch indicated generally at 17 effective to connect the pulley to the mechanism for reciprocating the plunger. A clutch control mechanism 18 (Fig. 2) is provided and a treadle rod 19 connected to a pivotally mounted lever 20 is effective to initiate actuation of the control mechanism and clutch when the treadle rod 19 is depressed. When the clutch, through depression of the treadle rod connects the pulley 16 to the plunger actuating mechanism, for a single revolution of the pulley there will be efiected a single complete reciprbcation of the plunger 14 and die 15 toward and from the work. A safety latching mechanism 21 and 22, hereinafter described, and forming a part of the clutch control mechanism 18 is provided to prevent actuation of the clutch and plunger 14 at "other than the proper time in the cycle of operations.
In Figs. 5 to 8 there is illustrated a fragmentary laminated quarter of a shoe formed of a lining L, the quarter material M and an overlay or applique A. V
Fig. 7 shows the quarter prior to an ornamenting operation thereon, and Fig. 8 shows the same work after it has been ornamented by perforating at 23, 24 and 25. In operating on this type of "shoe, it will be noted that part of the design is cut through the applique or strap portion, and the remaining ornamentation applied to the quarter proper. In attempting to ornament shoe parts of this nature, a condition arises, which is very troublesome to shoe manufacturers, caused by the fact that the thickness of the applique causes the cutting edges of a die, as ordinarily constructed, to strike the applique first and prevents other cutting edges of the die from reaching the thinner portions of the upper. In aligning the work with respect to the die, it is desirable to utilize the edge of the applique as an abutment against which the cutting edges of the die may be placed prior to the cutting out operation, but with conventional dies, it is practically impossible to position the die against the work in such a manner that certain cutting edges of the die will engage the abutment formed by the edge of the applique. This same condition prevails in machines where the die is stationary and work is moved to the die.
In order to make it possible to either lower the die or raise the work, so that those cutters which are to operate in the lesser thicknesses of 'the material, can contact with the upper, while other cutters which are to operate in thicker parts of the work can also contact with the work, there is provided a resilient mounting for a part of the cutters such that in the preliminary en- "gagement of the cutting edges of the die with the work, for aligning purposes, those cutters which operate on thinner portions of the work will have a yieldable, advanced position over the balance of the cutters.
To this end, the die unit 15 (Figs. 3 and 4) is formed with a die block 26 to which is secured an extension 27 carrying the cutter 28. Also carried by the block is a series of struts or sleeves 29 within which are mounted for sliding movement, studs 30 normally spring pressed outwardly. A composite plate 31 is connected to the studs for movement relative to the sleeves 29 and block 26, and carries the cutter 32, and perforating tubes 33. Pins 34 serve to limit movement of the block 31 in either direction.
Interiorly of the extension 27, from the cutter 28 to the open interior of the unit, is a conduit 35 for the passage of chips, and all of the cutters 28, 32 and 33 are hollow for this purpose. The cutters are spaced from the base by the struts or sleeves 29 and form in conjunction with the sleeves and base, a chip receiving chamber, as will be evident from Fig. 4.
When the cutting out operation takes place, the cutter 28 first passes through the applique A and as it reaches the quarter M it is then in the same plane with the cutter 32 and perforating tubes 33, which are now solidly in contact with the die block 26. In this position the entire die passes through the quarter M and lining L and into the paper, brass plate or other backing material generally used between the work and the support.
It will be noted that the cutter 28 is positioned so that it will not interfere with the vision of the operator, whereby the operator may locate the resiliently mounted cutters 32 and 33 with a side of cutter 32 against the edge of the applique.
The resiliently mounted die, not only handles this type of work satisfactorily, but is equally effective with work having a single uniform thickness throughout.
While in the present embodiment the die is mounted upon a movable plunger and adapted to pierce a fixed work piece from above, it of course is entirely practical to reverse the operation and hold the die block against movement while making the work support movable toward and from the die. In fact the die may be located below the work and pressure applied either from above the work by moving the plunger down against the work and die, or by moving the die and work up to a resistant surface. As an illustration of such reversal of operation reference may be made to my copending application Serial No. 587,431 above noted.
The die is connected to the plunger by a die holder 36 attached to the plunger 14 by of a dovetail strip 37, slidable in a mating groove on the face of the plunger, and detachably secured therein, in a manner similar to that used in the above mentioned application- Extending upwardly from the holder at either side thereof are sleeves 41, into which sleeves extend studs 42, attached at their lower ends to the holder 36.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die carrier and a die attached to said carrier, means to move said die relative to its carrier and in proximity to the work support, whereby work thereon may be aligned relative to said die, and means to move said carrier to the die and thence move said unit further towards said work sup port, thereby to ornament the work.
6. A machine for ornamenting shoe partscomprising a work support, a die unit including a die carrier and a die, means attaching said die to the carrier for yielding movement relative thereto, means to move said die relative to its carrier and in proximity to the work support, whereby work on the latter support may be aligned relative to said die, and means to move said carrier to the die and thence move said unit further towards said work support, thereby to ornament the work.
7. A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means attaching said die to said member for movement therewith, including a plate interposed between the die and member and connected to the die and resilient means connecting said plate to said member, means to move said die yieldingly relative to said member in proximity to said support, whereby the work may be aligned on said support relative to said die, and means to move said member and die as a unit, toward said support thereby to ornament the work.
8. A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable to ward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a pair of plates interposed between the die and member, one of said plates being connected to the die and the other of said plates being connected to the member, and yieldable means connecting said plates to each other, means to move said die relative to said member in proximity to said support whereby the work may be aligned on said support relative to said die, and means to move said member and die as a unit, toward said support whereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a pair of plates interposed between the die and member, one of said plates being connected to the die and the other of said plates being connected to the member, a sleeve connected to one of said plates, a stud connected to the other of said plates and slidable within said sleeve and a spring connecting said stud and sleeve to form a yieldable connection between said plates, means to move said die relative to said member in proximity to said support, whereby the work may be aligned on said support relative to said die, and means to move said member and die as a unit, toward said support, thereby to ornament the work.
10. A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a pair of plates interposed between the die and the member, one of said plates being connected to the die' and the other of said plates being connected to the member and yieldable means connecting said plates to each other, means to move said die relative to said member in proximity to said support, power means to move said member and die as a unit, toward said support, thereby to ornament the work, and control means for said power means positioned for actuation by said die moving means, after the die reaches a predetermined position.
11. A machine for ornainenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a plate interposed between the die and the member, and connected to the die, yieldable means connecting the plate to said member, and operator controlled means connected to said plate and eiTective to separate the plate from the member, whereby the work may be aligned on the support relative to said die, and means to move said member and die as a unit toward said support thereby to ornament the work.
12. A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a pair of plates interposed between the die and the member, one of said plates being connected to the die and the other of said plates being connected to the member, and yieldable means connecting said plates to each other, operator controlled means connected to one of said plates and effective to separate said plates whereby the Work may be aligned on said support relative to said die, and means to actuate said member and die as a unit whereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a member movable toward and from said work support, a die, means mounting said die upon said member, including a pair of plates interposed between the die and the member, one of said plates being connected to the die and the other of said plates being connected to the member, and yieldable means connecting said plates to each other, operator controlled means connected to one of said plates and efiective to separate said plates whereby the work may be aligned on said support relative to said die, and means independent of said separating means for actuating said member and die as a unit toward said support thereby to ornament the work.

A device of the character described comprising a die holder having therein a socket, a locking member having a portion movable into and out of said socket, a die, a base therefor, means mounting said die on one side of said base, in spaced relation to form therewith, a chamber for the reception of chips, a notched abutment projecting from the other side of said base and adapted to extend into said socket for engagement with said locking member when said portion thereof is positioned in the socket, and means to move said portion relative to the socket.
28. A device of the character described comprising a die holder having therein a socket, a
locking member having a portion movable into and out of said socket, a die, a base therefor, means mounting said die on one side of said base, in spaced relation to form therewith, a chamber for the reception of chips, a notched abutment projecting from the other side of said base and adapted to extend into said socket for engagement with said locking member when said portion thereof is positioned in the socket, and means to move said portion relative to the socket, said base and holder also having a relatively engageable pin and socket to accurately locate the die on the holder and, by cooperation with the said member and first named socket, fix said die in position on the holder.

A device of the character described comprising a die support, a locking means thereon, a die, a base therefor, means mounting said die on one side of said base, in spaced relation to form therewith, a chamber for the reception of chips, an abutment projecting from the other side of said base, said abutment having a notch engageable and cooperative with said means to secure the die to said support, said base and support having a relatively engageable pin and socket to accurately locate the die on the support and retain same fixedly in supported position.
30. A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die carrier and die mounted on said carrier, means to move said die relative to its carrier and through a plane normal to the work support whereby work thereon may be aligned relative to the die, means to adjust the position of said work support relative to said die unit, and means to provide relative movement between said work support and die unit through a plane perpendicular to the work support, thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts, comprising a work support, a die unit including a die carrier and a die attached to said carrier, means to move said die relative to its carrier and through a plane normal to the work support, whereby work thereon may be aligned relative to said die, means to adjust the position of said work support relative to said die unit, and means to move said carrier to the die and thereafter move said unit further toward said work support thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder and die mounted thereon, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to the die, means to adjust the position of said work support, through a substantially horizontal plane, relative to said die unit, and means to provide relative movement between said work support and die unit through a plane perpendicular to the work support thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder and a die attached thereto, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, means to adjust the position of said work support through a substantially horizontal plane, relative to said die unit, and means to move said holder to the die, and thereafter move said unit further toward said work support thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder, and die mounted thereon, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to the die, means to adjust the position of said work support relative to said die unit, through a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the cutting edges of said die, and means to provide relative movement between said work support and die unit through a plane perpendicular to the work support thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder and a die attached thereto, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, means to adjust the position of said work support relative to said die unit, through a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the cutting edges of said die, and means to move said holder to the die, and thereafter move said unit further toward said work support, thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder, and die mounted thereon, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to the die, means to adjust the position of said work support relative to said die unit, through a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the cutting edges of said die, comprising a movable member connected to said work support, a guide for said member, and means con nected to said member for moving the member and work support as a unit, and means to provide relative movement between said work support and die unit through a plane perpendicular to the work support thereby to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a work support, a die unit including a die holder and die attached thereto, means to move said die relative to its holder and through a plane normal to the work support whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, means to adjust the position of said work support rela tive to said die unit, through a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the cutting edges of said die, comprising a movable member connected to said work support, a guide for said member and means connected to said member for moving the member and work support as a unit, and means to move said holder to the die, and ther a plane normal to said guide and in substantial alignment therewith, a member mounted for reciprocating movement insaid guide, a die attached to said member for movement therewith,

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a frame, a fixed guide therein, a work support having an upper surface positioned in a plane normal to said guide and in substantial alignment therewith, a member mounted for reciprocating movement in said guide, a die attached to said member for movement therewith, means to move said die through a plane normal to the work support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, and means to move said die further through the same plane to ornament the work, and resilient means effective to normally maintain said die in engagement with said member.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts comprising a frame, a fixed guide therein, a work supporting member movably mounted on said frame and having an upper surface positioned in a plane normal to said guide and in substantial alignment therewith, means forming part of said machine for positively moving said member and surface thereby to adjust the position of the work supporting member through a substantially horizontal plane, a member mounted for reciprocating movement in said guide, a die attached to said member for movement therewith, means to move said die through a plane normal to said support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, and means to move said die further through the same plane to ornament the work.

A machine for ornamenting shoe parts, comprising a work supporting member movably mounted on said machine, and having a flat upper surface, a die holder, a die operatively mounted thereon, means to move said die through a plane normal to said support, whereby a work piece may be aligned relative to said die, means forming part of said machine for positively moving said member thereby to adjust the position of the member through a substantially horizontal plane relative to said die unit, and means to provide relative movement between said support and die through a plane normal to said support, thereby to ornament the work.
