Abstract

856,189. Attaching pronged articles. WALKER Ltd., T. Sept. 25, 1958 [Sept. 28, 1957], No. 30462/57. Class 89(3) A clenching press for attaching pronged devices such as staples or fastening hook devices to material comprises a fixed frame 5, Fig. 2, overhanging a bed 2 and carrying a head part 1; the head part 1 and bed 2 being relatively movable towards and away from one another to effect the clenching operation, a carrier member 19 provided with upper tool or workholding means pivoted to the head part 1 for angular movement in a vertical plane between operative and inoperative positions, retaining means being provided for maintaining the carrier member in set positions. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 4, the carrier member 19 comprises a bar having two rectangular lugs 21 which embrace the head 1, a pivot pin 22 being passed therethrough. Springs 23 fixed to the arm 5 are arranged to bear upon the top faces of the lugs 21, as in Fig. 4, to locate the carrier member in its operative position, and to engage projections 24 on side faces of the lugs 21 to locate the carrier member in its inoperative position, shown in Fig. 2. The member 19 carries a pair of workholders 20 which are adjustable lengthwise of the member 19. Angular movement of the member 19 between its operative and inoperative positions is effected by means of a lever 28. The workholders 20, which have spring pressed hinge plates 25 adapted to receive staple members, are located above clenching anvils on a mandrel 15 adapted to be inserted into a pocket or sleeve of the material to which the staple member is to be attached. The mandrel is fixed to a bar 17 pivoted to the bed 2 which is raised and lowered to perform the clenching operation by means of a foot operated lever 9. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the member 19 is caused to be automatically pivoted between its operative and inoperative positions by the rising and falling movements of the bed 2, transmitted to the member 19 by a spring loaded linkage. In another embodiment, two workholders 20, Fig. 7, are carried on two arms 34, 35 of an angular lever pivoted at 36 to the head I of the press, the lever being operable by hand or otherwise to selectively bring any one of the workholders into an operative vertical position, enabling one workholder to be in an inoperative position in which it may be loaded whilst the other workholder is in operation. Instead of the two-armed lever carrying workholders, the arms thereof may carry top clenching tools. Specifications 788,480, 827,457 and 839,892 are referred to.
