[Also in Group VII] The invention according to the parent Specification is modified in that the mandrel which is insertable into the pocket or sleeve of flexible material, is associated with a vertically movable lower member of a clenching press. In the exemplified embodiment the clenching press is of the general kind described in Specification 827,457. In Fig. 1, a mandrel 20 is provided at one end with an anvil 21 for clenching the prongs on a staple member 6 carried in a fixed workholder 5, and is pivoted at its other end to the free end 19 of an arm 18 formed integral with one end of a block 7 which forms the lower movable part of the press whereby it may be swung in a horizontal plane between an operative position in which the anvil 21 is located beneath the workholder 5 and a position in which it overhangs the base 1 of the press so as to enable it to be inserted into the sleeve or pocket of flexible material. When the press is operated the block 7, with the mandrel, is caused to rise and approach the workholder 5. The mandrel 20 is releasably urged by a spring 25 into a groove in the top surface of the end part 19 of the arm 18 to locate the mandrel in the operative position. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the mandrel is pivoted to turn in a vertical direction about a horizontal axis. The mandrel may be a loose removable bar provided with means for locating it on the movable block or it may consist of a resilient bar fixed at one end to the block. In Fig. 7 the mandrel 30 is carried cantilever fashion at the top of a vertical post 31 resting on the bed 1a of the press and freely slidable in a guideway 32 the movable block 7b, the post 31 being of greater length than the depth of block. When the block 7b is raised the mandrel remains stationary until engaged by the block after which the block 7b and mandrel 30 move upwards in unison.
