[Class 141] Apparatus for marking garments comprises a stationary platform 36 on which the person stands, having a base member 12 connected thereto so as to be movable therearound, a post 14 mounted on the member 12, and adapted to slidably support a carrier 16 for a marking device, and a rotatable shaft 18 supported between the member 12 and a head 17 the shaft having a connection to the carrier 16 to permit the latter to be raised or lowered, the marking device comprising a stapling mechanism 24 which is operated by a spring-pressed plunger 30 to cause a staple to pass through a garment 33. A graduated tape 34 is housed on a spring roller in a casing 35, and is secured at its lower end to a hub 20 on the carrier 16. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the carrier is curved downwardly to form a U-shaped receiver for the bottom of a garment, the stapling mechanism being inverted, and the post carries graduation marks, the graduated tape being dispensed with. In another modification, the rotatable shaft is replaced by a rack and pinion. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the stapling mechanism is replaced by a marking disc 53, e.g., of chalk which together with a friction roller 52 and cup 54 is mounted on a shaft 51 rotated from a shaft 66, the roller 52 and cup 54 being in frictional driving contact with an impression roll 55 secured to a shaft 56 mounted in a frame 57, and carrying impression points 58, the latter acting in conjunction with the disc 53 to leave an impression on the garment 33. The roll 55 is moved towards or away from the roller 52 and cup 54 by a finger lever 65 acting in conjunction with springs 59 and rods 60. In a variation of this form, Fig. 11 (not shown), the carrier is formed with two pairs of downwardly extending supports through which the rods are passed for connection to the frame carrying the impression roll. In another modification, Fig. 14, the base member 12 is caused to move in an oval path about the platform, and the stapling mechanism 97 is slidingly mounted on plates 96 secured to a table 94, the stapling mechanism being operated by a plunger 30. The measuring tape 105 is of concavo-convex form, and passed over a roller mounted in the top of the post 14 being secured at its other end to the table 94. The magazine 107 for the staples contains powdered chalk or the like so that the staples are powdered when passed through the garment. In a further modification, means are provided for applying marking material, e.g., chalk to the cross bars of the staples.
