Classes 43 and 89(3) Apparatus for attaching a device such as a fastening device 1, Fig. 1 for wearing apparel to the outer face of material by means of clenched-over prongs 6 carried by a complementary back-plate 4'on the underside of the material, comprises a workholder 13, Fig. 3, for carrying the device 1 and adapted to be secured to the upper member 12 of a clenching press, the upper member 12 being relatively movable towards and away from a lower member 10 adapted to support the pronged backplate 4, the workholder 13 being associated with one or more clenching elements 23 carried by the upper member 12 which during the attachment operation are brought into clenching engagement with the upstanding prongs 6 of the back-plate 4 by a lateral movement transversely to the vertical plane or planes in which the prongs 6 initially lie. The workholder 13 comprises a tubular body part 29. adapted to be secured to the upper member 12 of the press, and slidably carrying a stem 17 which is urged downwardly by a spring 34. The lower end of the stem 17 passes through a block 19 and is fixed to a dovetail shaped element 20 adapted to engage in the slot of the hook tongue 3 of the fastening device 1. The clenching elements 23 are pivoted to the block 19 9 and are provided with inturned flanges 24 and upper cam edges 26 engageable with inclined surfaces 27 on, the tubular body 19. The back-plate 4, inserted between two thickness of the material 35, is located on the lower member 10 by means of spring pressed pins 36 carried by the member 10 penetrating locating holes 5 in the backplate 4 through the lower layer of material. With the hook member 1 applied to the element 20 the upper member 12 is moved downwardly by means of a foot operated lever. The hook member 1 engages the material and causes the prongs 6 to be forced through the material until no further downward movement of the stem 17 is possible. The upper member 12 however continues its downward movement so that the surfaces 27 engage the cam edges 26 to pivot the clenching member 23 and cause the flanges 24 to move inwardly to clench the prongs 6.
