Abstract

215,400. Coley, H. E. Nov. 10, 1922. Dry processes of extracting metals. - Ores or oxides are reduced by heating them to a temperature not exceeding that normally employed for reduction, and at that temperature injecting on to or into' the heated material a hydrocarbon such as crude oil, petroleum or the like, or a substance containing hydrocarbon such as coal, peat, lignite or the like, so that the hydrocarbon &c. is decomposed in contact with the ore &c. and the reduction is effected by nascent carbon. The furnace may be rotary or provided with means for moving the material. In the furnace shown, the material is fed to the top of a vertical chamber c heated by a burner g and provided with pivoted baffles d which are tilted from time to time to transfer the charge to the baffle below. The hydrocarbon &c. is admitted to the material by injectors h. The reduced material is preferably discharged by means of a cooled conveyer j. The Provisional Specification refers also to paraffin, petrol, and alcohol as reducing-agents.
