Charges, agitating; metallurgical furnaces.-A furnace for the extraction of zinc comprises an electrically heated chamber surmounted by a preheating-chamber heated by combustion of gas, such as carbon monoxide from the zinc condensers. Above the preheating chamber, there may be a drying-chamber, which may comprise an open upper compartment 1 and a lower compartment 3 heated by combustion products from the preheating-chamber 4. The preheating- chamber may also consist of two or more superposed compartments. The combustible gas is led into the chamber 4 by a pipe 5. Cooled conveyers 10 effect the transfer of the charge from one chamber to another. The openings around the electrodes 7 in the electric furnace roof serve also for the passage of the charge from the preheating-chamber.
