Abstract

April 30, 1923, [Convention date Motor power plant.-In a turbine locomotive, the turbines 2 driving the auxiliary machines are placed between the boiler 1 and the main turbine 3, the maximum pressure of the admission steam to the main turbine being equal to or less than the pressure of the exhaust steam from the auxiliary turbine. The whole of the main steam passes through the turbines 2 and is regulated by the main valve 5. To enable the turbines 2 to be run when the main turbine is idle, the supply pipe 8 is divided into branches 12, 13 containing main and auxiliary valves 5, 5<1> ; these pipes feed two groups of guide blades 15, 16 providing a small and large pressure drop respectively, so that when steam passes only through the blades 16, the exhaust pressure' is insufficient to drive the main turbine but helps to cool it. This exhaust pipe 10 may be divided into branches 10a, 10<c> opening into different places in the inlet part of the main turbine. Each branch except 10<a> is provided with a separate control valve 19. The turbines 2 may be in series or parallel and may drive feed pumps, or condenser fans, &c.
