Casings.-The casing of a steam or gas turbine is divided at right angles to the axis into a portion b, p of rolled or pressed material which surounds the high-pressure part of the rotor and is undivided axially, and a portion c of cast material which is divided axially. The diaphragm supporting cylinder t is connected only to the casing portion c and is also axially divided. The resultant pressure on the parts c, t acts, together with the parts b, p, to tighten the axial joints of the low pressure casing. For additional strength, a cylinder e, Fig. 3, fixed to the portion c is tightly surrounded by the portion b and is connected to the cylinder t by webs j. Shallow recesses g are formed on the periphery of the cylinder e. Modifications, such as annular ribs or longitudinal ribs of various forms, are described, replacing the cylinder e. Specification 209,021 is referred to.
