Abstract
135,949. Howden & Co., J., and Hume, J. H. Dec. 5, 1918. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A turbine shaft is packed by a ring 1, formed with grooves bounded by knife-edges 4, which engage, with clearance, the shaft 5 and collars 6 on the shaft. The ring 1 is formed with a flange of T-section engaging a recess of similar section in the diaphragm 2. Both the diaphragm and the ring 1 are formed in halves engaging by a groove-andtongue joint. A key 7, secured by a screw 8 in a recess in the groove in the diaphragm, projects into a recess 9 in the ring 1 and prevents its rotation.
