The drum packing is tightened by a movement of the shaft to the left, and the disk packing by a movement to the right. Steam leaking past the packing h passes into chambers m, k, respectively, and these chambers are connected by a pipe. The arrangement is such that sufficient leakage steam from the high-pressure end passes into the chamber k, and, acting on the disk, balances the end thrust. Labyrinth packings t, t<1> reduce leakage through the stuffing- boxes by reducing the pressure to which they are subjected.
