Abstract

25,492. Wilkinson, J. Nov. 24,1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-The shaft of a turbine or other rotary machine is packed by liquid kept in cir culation by centrifugal action. The rotating shaft 2, Fig. 2, carries a web 4 with flanges 8, 9 rotating in a fixed casing 1. The flange 8 at the pressure side of the apparatus may be shorter than the other flange 9, or the same effect may be obtained by providing in the flange 8 apertures 12 opening into an under-cut groove, which may be formed by rings 16, 17, as shown in Fig. 4. The centrifugal action forces the liquid from the high-pressure chamber H through the apertures 12 and round the periphery of the web to the low-pressure chamber L, from which the liquid returns to the chamber H through passages 11. When the turbine is stationary, leakage is prevented by flap valves 22, and water passed through the apparatus by pipes 23, 24. The web and casing may have intermeshing flanges, as shown, or they may be plain.
