26,598. Warwick Machinery Co., [General Electric Co.]. Dec. 6. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Turbine shafts are packed by rings 10 of gas carbon mixed with a little graphite and compressed. The rings are made in segments and held in a retaining-ring 11 and may be caused to grip the shaft by an embedded resilient band 21. Two of them are pressed apart against the bottom 9 and cover 13 of the box by a spring 16, or they may be piled up in an external chamber 18 which is connected by a valved pipe 22 with one or more of the bucket-wheel chambers. The rings may be pressed against their bearing-surfaces by steam admitted through a valve 26, Fig. 4, from the boiler or first stage.
