Abstract

26,162. Bailey, J. N. Dec. 1. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Collars 2 on the shaft in a rotary engine, turbine, or the like, or as shown on a bushing 3 secured to it, rotate in grooves 4 in a sleeve 5, which can move longitudinally in the opening in the casing and is preferably made in halves held together by screwed rings 6, 7. The ring 7 is of larger diameter than the ring 6, and both have packing-rings 8 to make tight joints in the turbine or other casing. The end of the ring 7 forms one wall of an annular chamber 9 to which, in the case of a condensing turbine, fluid under pressure is admitted under the control of a hand-valve or of the valve shown. The bearing-surfaces on the shaft and sleeve are in this manner held in contact so as to prevent leakage. The fluid under pressure, acting on the piston 14, forces it to the left to open the port 18 and admit the fluid to the chamber 9. When the pressure in this chamber reaches the required amount, it pushes the piston 15 to the right and closes the port 18. Any variation of pressure in the turbine casing acts on the piston 16 to adjust the pressure in the chamber 9. The fluid in this chamber may be admitted through ducts 10, 11, 12 to the grooves to form sides. When the pressure in the turbine or other casing is greater than that of the atmosphere, a partial vacuum is formed in the chamber 9, its amount being regulated in a similar way to that described above.
