Abstract

114,486. Sadler, D. P. April 11. 1917. Packing; packing, adjusting or compressing.- Packing D is adjusted by the action of steam or atmospheric pressure on a piston U in a casing F secured to the end of the stuffing-box by bolts P. The packing consists of bevelled segmental brass rings faced with antifriction metal and is arranged in the spaces between a sleeve E and the stuffing- box wall and piston-rod, the sleeve E being secured to the piston U. An extension of the sleeve enters a recess in a ring C acted on by springs B. The piston U works on a sleeve I secured to the cover T of the casing F and is formed with annular projections, fitted with packing-rings and working in recesses formed by projections X on the casing F and cover T. Steam is admitted to the annular space L by a pipe S, and atmospheric pressure is admitted to a space N by ports 0.
