22,908. Randerson, J. P. Dec. 19, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Pistons; stuffing-boxes.-In packing for pistons, which can be used with suitable modification in stuffing-boxes, an L-shaped bull-ring C rests at its angle only on a machined circumferential shoulder formed on the piston body A. Compound packing-rings D, E are expanded by an expanding-ring F of cast metal, such as cast-iron, the packing-rings and expanding-rings having a working fit in their housings, so that steam cannot pass freely behind the rings, the restriction to the passage of steam maintaining a steady pressure on the rings. Relative motion between the parts of the compound ring is prevented by an abutment on the larger part D, which enters and fills up the space between ends of the smaller part E. The bull-ring may be turned to the same diameter as or slightly smaller than the piston body.
