127,235. British Westinghouse Elec-- tric & Manufacturing Co., (Assignees; of Hodgkinson, F.). May 24, 1918, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. -In packing for turbine shafts and dummy pistons &c., of the type consisting of a series of rings on one or both parts extending nearly to the surface of the other part, thin segmental rings are employed backed by stouter supporting-rings. In the arrangment shown in Fig. 3, each packing-ring consists of a thin segmental ring 19 backed by a segmental supporting-ring 18 arranged to break joint. The ring 18 has a periphery of reduced thickness, in order that the edge of the packing may be flexible. The rings 18, 19 have inner flanges entering under- ..cut grooves in the part 16, and are secured by a caulking-strip 22. In a modification, two thin rings 19 are employed arranged to break joint, and the reduced extension 20 of the ring 18 is dispensed with.
