Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A leakage-preventing device for impulse turbines, such as those of the Curtis type, comprises a sleeve E having a flange D secured to the stationary diaphragm A. The sleeve is recessed to receive a segmental ring J of brass or other soft metal or composition, the inner surface K of which is circumferentially grooved. The sleeve E, which is preferably of the same material as the shaft B, is formed with a reduced part G to facilitate expansion. The segments J are tongued together as shown, with the necessary clearance, and, to allow for circumferential expansion of the segments, one only of the securing-screws H for each segment has a tight fit in the ring E.
