The high-pressure steam on the neck d<1>, and the low-pressure steam on the shoulder m, are balanced by high-pressure steam admitted to a cavity n through passages p. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a carbon ring r works in a recess in the ring d with sufficient clearance for balancing-steam. In a further modification, the ring r is a neat fit in the recess in the sleeve d, and the cavity for balancing-steam is formed in the ring r.
