Abstract

Packing, metallic.-In segmental packing for piston-rods, valve-rods, &c. each segment fulcrums on a bar parallel to the rod, thus preventing undue pressure of the packing on the rod. The fulcrum rods D are supported by two end rings B, which are recessed to receive springs b<2>, and receive also the flanges on locking-rings C. Each ring A is preferably formed in three segments, and is traversed by two rods D, on one of which it fulcrums, while the other rod passes through an enlarged hole in the segment. The locking-ring C at the inner end of the box may be formed with a convex face or with a passage for admitting steam to the back of the packing. The locking-ring C at the outer end of the box is formed with a flange c<3> which engages soft packing P. In a modification, the rings B, C engage each other by bevelled surfaces instead of by flange-andgroove joints.
