2259. McDonnell, P. Jan. 28. Packing, metallic.-Packing for piston-rods. valve spindles, &c. consists of soft-metal rings E divided into halves and compressed between solid bevelled brass rings D, combined with a soft-metal ring F which is expanded against the rod and the stuffing-box by a follower G. For convenience in handling, the rings E are incompletely divided at the time of manufacture, the division being completed before the rings are placed in the box.
