Abstract
Liquid fuel for internal-combustion engines consists of a considerable proportion of constituents boiling above 160 DEG C., liquid hydrocarbon boiling below 150 DEG C., a small proportion of an ether, and a sufficient proportion of a phenolic body to retain the ether in the mixture. The heavier portions of crude petroleum, coal tar, brown coal tar, shale oil, shale tar, peat tar, and wood tar are specified as suitable materials of high boiling point; petrol, benzine, benzol, hydrogenated hydrocarbons such as those sold under the registered Trade Marks "Tetraline" and "Dekaline," and hydrogenated naphthols are suitable lighter hydrocarbons. 30-80 per cent of heavier oil, 3-8 per cent of phenol or cresol, and 2-10 per cent of methyl or ethyl ether are normally employed. The ether and phenolic body may be first mixed to form molecular or addition compounds and added as such to the hydrocarbon. If phenols are already present in the oil used the quantity added is correspondingly reduced. In an example 60 litres of brown coal tar oil, 40 litres of benzine, 5 litres of ether, and 3-8 of phenol or cresol are used.
