Description
Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GUSTAV EGLOIEF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO'UNIVERsAL OIL PRODUCTS CO]!!- PANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA PRODUCTION MOTOR FUEL No Drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in methods for producin motor fuel, and refers more particularly to t e production of motor fuels having high antiknock and-combustion retarding properties.
In the past few years, there has been considerable development work done along the line of producing a motor fuel in which the fractions would be uniformly consumed, in
burning, thus resulting in a more efficient for the purpose of producing an overhead.
distillate containin gasoline-or similar motor fuels of hig These overhead products contain nitrogen compounds which have high antiknock properties, likewise phenolic, also oxidized hydrocarbons blended with a high prcentageof unsaturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons.
These overhead distillates produced by cracking low temperature coal tar, contain a large portion of lighter fractions suitable for use as motor fuel. I separate these fractions in any obvious manner by means of fractionation or thelike. I
Using as a base straight run gasoline which may be defined as the condensed overhead product of the distillation of crude oil, I may blend regulated portions of said motor fuel produced by cracking low temperature coal tar to producea blended product suitable for use as a motor fuel, preferably in a high compression engine which possesses high antiknock properties. It may be particularly pointed out that the motor fuel produced in accordance with the present invention will operate much more eflicientl in a high compression engine than in a ow compression engine where the ratio is say, 4% to 1 instead petroleum oil.

of 6 tol and higher, although it is'to be understood that I do not in any way wish to limit myself to the use of this fuel in a motor having any specific compression.
I have found that the proportions may be from say 15 to 20% of the overhead product of cracking low temperature coal tar, to 80 to 85% of straight run gasoline which will produce a motor fuel, possessing these desirable antiknock properties, although it is to be understood that I do not in any way wish to limit myself to any particular proportions, as it may be found advantageous to materially increase or decrease the relative proportions as above illustrated.
I have referred above to the use of straight 'run gasoline as the base. It is to bepa'rticularly noted that I may employ as a base a cracked gasoline produced from petroleum oils, or a mixture of cracked gasoline and straight-run gasoline, both produced from I claim as my invention: 1. A motor fuel characterized by itsantiknock properties. comprising a pressure distillate produced by cracking low tempera-- ture coal tar blended with a greater. quantity of straight run gasoline obtained from the distillation of crude petroleum oil.
2. A motor fuel characterized by its antiknock properties composed of pressure dis-' tillate produced from the cracking of low temperature coal tar and straight run gaso line obtained from the distillation of crude petroleum, the ratio of straight run gasoline to pressure distillate being in excess of three toone.
3. A motor fuel characterized by its antiknock properties comprising a pressure distillate produced by cracking low temperature coal tar blended with gasoline obtained from petroleum.
4. A motor fuel knock properties comprising a pressure distillate'produced by cracking low temperature coal tar blended with a greater quantity of gasoline obtained from petroleum.
5. A motor fuel characterized by its antiknock pro rties comprising pressure distillate pro need from the cracking of low characterized by its antitemperature coal tar and asoline obtained from petroleum, the ratio gasoline to pres- .sure distillate being in excess of three to one.
6. A non-detonating fuel for'high compression motors, comprising a blend of cracked gasoline with regulated quantities of the cracked overhead product of low temperature coal tar distillation,
7. A motor fuel possessing desirable antiknock properties comprislng a blend of from 15% to 20%" of the overhead product of cracking coal tar to to of straight run gasoline.
