212,081. Evans, E. J., and Hemphill, G. E. Feb. 19, 1923. Sliding and pivoted jaw wrenches; handles.- Relates to pipe wrenches of the kind in which a spindle 15 contained in a hollow shank 10 carrying the fixed jaw 12 is rotated by means of a reciprocating sleeve 19 engaging a helical groove 17 in the spindle and in turn, by means of screw-threads 16 engaging a nut-member 30, operates the movable jaw 35 which is preferably pivotally mounted and spring-pressed towards the fixed jaw. The shank 37 of the movable jaw 35 is pivoted at 38 to a rectangular casing 25 slidable on the shank 10 and carrying, by means of the pivot pin 38, the nut-member 30 consisting of a part-nut passing through a slot 31 in the shank 10 and having portions engaging guide surfaces 32 on the shank 10 and arms 33 extending upwards and between the shank 37 and the sides of the casing 25. The jaw 35 is under the influence of a spiral spring 40 housed in a socket in the end of the shank 37. The sleeve 19 is provided with a pin 20 projecting through a slot 18 in the shank to engage the groove 17. The jaws may have detachable faces as shown.
