Abstract

Clutches, ratchet.-An irreversible driving- connection is of the type comprising co-axial driving and driven members g<1>, and a spring k which is secured at one end to the member g<1> and grips the member h in one direction of rotation but is disconnected if the member h turns backwards. As shown, the member g<1> is the hub of a starting-handle g. A spring k is secured at one end to a rotatable sleeve n, and a ring o slidably keyed to the sleeve n is lightly braked by a pair of members s connected by bolts passing through lugs e on a fixed casing b, the members s being acted upon by an adjustable spring u. The parts are normally held in the position shown by a spring r. At starting, the handle g is moved axially to bring a clutch member q into engagement with the engine shalt, and on turning the handle, the spring k grips and drives the shaft h. If the engine and the shaft h turn backwards, the spring k releases its grip on the shaft h and does not transmit the rotation to the member g'. In a modification, the brake members s are replaced by spring-pressed plungers.
