Abstract
211,638. Muntz, W. E. June 7, 1920. Engines working on special systems.-In reciprocating or rotary engines or turbines the steam supply is intermittently cut off so that a rapid succession of impulses is imparted to the piston during each stroke or to each vane during each revolution. As applied to a reciprocating engine, a spigot cock 6 driven by a chain 8 from some rotating part of the engine, is interposed between the piston valve 3 controlling the steam supply, and the cylinder 11. The cock may be in two parts 6', 16 seated by a spring 20, and driven in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 4. In the application to a turbine, the cock is driven at a speed such that each blade receives several impulses during its passage past the steam-inlet port, which is of a width to direct the steam simultaneously on to a number of blades.
