Abstract

211,224. Alley, S. E. Nov. 15, 1922. Compound or articulated road vehicles.-In transport vehicles of the type comprising a tractor and trailer with a turntable connection between them, one of the turntable elements is connected to its part of the vehicle through spring-controlled pivotal couplings situated on opposite sides of the turntable pin, so as to allow for front, rear, and lateral tilting of one vehicle part relative to the other. Means are provided also for lubrication of the couplings and the turntable, while the main longitudinal members of the chassis of the tractor and trailer respectively are spaced so as to be out of coincidence vertically one above the other when the vehicle parts are in the straight-line position. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through the turntable, 12 being the longitudinal members of the tractors and 13 those of the trailer, the latter being reinforced by skid rails 131. The upper member 15 of the turntable is connected rigidly to the trailer, while the lower member 16 is connected to the tractor through ball-ended, sliding, spring-controlled pins 17. The sleeves 20 rock on spherical surfaces 21, Fig. 3, during front and rear tilting of the vehicle parts, while the, pins 17 slide in their bearings during lateral canting. Provision for forced lubrication is made at 25, 28, the latter nozzle delivering to a channel 26 forming the bearing surface between the two parts of the turntable.
