Partitions and baffles in water space; tubes, water.-A locomotive or like steam generator is divided into three longitudinal compartments by vertical partitions 2, the side compartments being closed at the firebox end by partitions 14 and communicating with collectors 15 which extend on each side of the firebox 8 and are placed wholly inside or outside the boiler shell. Hot water passes from the middle to the side compartments by passages 12 and carries the feed-water entering at 24 into the collectors 15 and thence into Field-tubes 17 crossing the firebox. Openings 11 are formed at the top of the partitions 2 and the collectors 15 may be open at the top. In a modification the partitions extend to the end plate 13 and have openings at the bottom, circulation passages being provided by one or more horizontal partitions in the side of the compartments which may be closed at the top and contain fire-tubes.
