Brakes, arrangement and disposition of; controlling apparatus, arrangements of hand, foot, and transmission gear in conjunction with.-In brakes for the steering-wheels of motor vehicles of the kind' wherein the cam-actuating shaft 1 is supported by the steering-swivel 2, the member 5 carrying the control lever 8 is slidably mounted in a joint 6 on the axle 7, and the ball joint 4 connecting the members 1, 5 is located outside the pivotal axis of the steering-swivel, the member 5 is extended through the joint 6, so that the point of action of the control lever may be located either in the vertical plane of the joint 6 or on either side of it. In the first case, the lever 8 may be mounted as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be mounted directly on the joint 6 or on the axle 7, a ball joint being provided between the members 8, 5 in the last instance. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the braking action is unaffected by the steering movement of the wheels, since the point of action 9 of the control lever is not appreciably displaced during steering. When, as shown in Fig. 5, the point of action 9 is located between the joints 6. 4. the steering of the wheels will increase the braking action on the inner wheel and diminish that on the outer wheel, whereas, when, as shown in Fig. 6, the point of action 9 is located between the joint 6 and the centre line of the vehicle, the braking action of the inner wheel is diminished and that of the outer wheel is increased during steering. In the constrution shown in Fig. 5, the point of action 9 is so located that the couples to which the steering-swivel is subjected by the traction of the control lever and the resistance of the braked wheel are balanced.
