Abstract

Recoil apparatus.-Relates to a multi-barrel gun having an even number of barrels arranged in pairs or equal groups so that the energy of recoil of one barrel or of one group of barrels is utilized wholly or partially in a suit. able recuperator for running out the other barrel or group of barrels, thereby maintaining an approximately constant position for the centre of gravity of the combined parts during firing. According to the invention, the recoilbrake of one system is modified to act as the recuperator for the other system, all the parts being carried by the common oscillating mass of the gun. In the form shown in inverted plan in Fig. 2, two barrels A and B carrying brake pistons D, E are mounted in a common cradle C carrying the brake cylinders F, G with counter-rods f, g. The recoil of the barrel A causes the piston D to force liquid from the cylinder F through a passage H into the cylinder G to return the barrel B to firing position. The recoil of the barrel B on firing acts in a similar manner to restore the barrel A. In a modification shown in Fig. 7, the piston rods D, I and E, J attached to the barrels are in telescoping parts, the pistons I<1>, J<1> being grooved to engage tapered keys F<1>, G' in brake cylinders F, G, which are connected by a tube K. The recoil of the barrel A to the position shown acts through the fluid pressure to move the barrel B forwards, a projection B<1> on this barrel engaging a rod M to stress a spring recuperator N that reacts to return the barrel B. The return of the barrel B acts through fluid pressure to restore the barrel A to a position of rest in line with the barrel B.
