Abstract

517,697. Machine guns. TENNANT, W. J. (Verwaltungs Ges. der Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Oerlikon). Aug. 4, 1938, No. 23126. [Class 92 (ii)] The gas-pressure forces acting on the breechblock 4 of an automatic firearm are absorbed by hydraulic means which serves to couple the breech-block with the barrel 1 during the action of these forces. In the construction shown, the breech-block (shown in plan in Fig. 4) is connected by a member 8 and piston rods 10 with two pistons 11 moving in fluid-filled cylinders 14 connected to the barrel Each piston is provided with a spring-loaded non-return valve 12 and with longitudinal passages 11a, and the seat of the valve 12 is provided with slits 11b. When the breech-block moves forwardly under the action of a spring 5, the liquid is forced from one end of the cylinders to the other through passages 7b until the pistons close the forward ends of these passages. Subsequently, the liquid passes throughthe passages 11b and valves 12, the latter being urged by the liquid to their open positions. On recoil, the liquid can at first escape only through the slits 11b, since the valve 12, is closed, thus effecting a hydraulic coupling between the breech-block and barrel which, under this influence, move rearwardly in the breechcasing 3 against the action of a recuperator spring 6. This hydraulic coupling is released when the pistons uncover the forward ends of the passages 7b. The breech-casing 3 is connected to the gun mount by a bolt 16 and carries a stop 3d which limits the forward movement of the barrel.
