Abstract

1371878 A firing weapon WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKONBUHRLE AG 12 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 1670/73 Heading F3C [Also in Division F2] In a firing weapon with a barrel member displaceable from a rest position into a working position, a multi-stage hydraulic-mechanical braking of the forward movement from the rest position of the barrel member is effected by an hydraulic brake having a cylinder 10 with a piston 13 therein, the latter having bores 22 formed therein, and by a mechanical brake which is connected in series with the hydraulic brake by a flange 30 of a sleeve 29 and has a set of springs 31 which are located in the cylinder 10. The bores 22 each have an end capable of being closed by a ring 27, thus forming a check valve, the ring 27 being urged by a spring 28 and having a protrusion 34 which is engageable with an end 36 of a sleeve 32 mounted in the cylinder 10 so as to limit the movement of the ring 27, and the bores 22 each have the other end 23 capable of being closed by a ring 24, which also forms a check valve, the ring 24 being urged by a spring 26. The latter is supported axially by a ring 25 and a spring 21 and the spring 28 is axially supported by the flange 30 of the sleeve 29, the flange 30 also being engageable by the springs 31. A sleeve 14 is displaceably mounted in the rod 12 of the piston 13 and is urged by a spring 17 and plugs 15, 16 are positioned at the respective ends of the piston rod 12. A slot 33 is formed in the sleeve 32 to allow fluid to flow from one side of the piston to the other side and is shaped as shown in Fig. 3 to ensure that the recoil force generated during firing of the weapon will be transmitted as a constant force to the gun mount. In operation the recoil of the barrel of the weapon causes the movement of the piston rod 12 against the force of the spring 21 so that fluid in the annular compartment formed between the piston rod 12 and the sleeve 32 flows through the slot 33 in the latter to the other side of the piston 13, the slot 33 being gradually closed by the piston 13 and the spring 21 being compressed to its limit. The ring 27 has moved into contact with the stop 36 and an intermediate compartment exists between the piston 13 and the ring 27 from which fluid flows into the bores 22. When the piston returns, the ring 24 is moved away from the piston by fluid passing through the bores 22 into the intermediate compartment. The impacting of the piston 13 against the ring 27 during the forward movement of the barrel of the weapon closes the bores 22 and the fluid flows through the slot 33 back to the annular compartment formed between the piston rod 12 and the sleeve 32, the gun barrel now being at its pre-firing position. Further forward movement of the gun barrel is damped by the springs 31, the ring 27 preventing escape of fluid through the slot 33.
