Abstract

1340922 Hydraulic buffers MAUSERWERKE AG 10 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 19951/71 Heading F2S [Also in Division F3] The firing rate of an automatic firearm is regulated by a buffer assembly which is mounted coaxially and comprises mechanical and hydraulic members which are automatically coupled with and uncoupled from a breech of the firearm. The buffer assembly absorbs kinetic energy from the breech and returns the latter to its firing position. The hydraulic members are arranged concentrically in the mechanical members and effect the regulating of the firing rate. In an embodiment a barrel 1 has a screwthreaded aperture which receives one end of a buffer casing la therein and has a stepped aperture which receives a buffer head 2 therein. A spring 3 is positioned in the casing la and urges the head 2 against the step in the aperture of the barrel 1. A slider head 6 is slidably mounted in the head 2 and is fixed to a cylinder 5 which is slidable on a piston 4 supported by a piston-rod 4d secured to a closed end 1b of the casing la. A recoil spring 8 disposed within the buffer spring 3 bears against the end face of the head 6. A breech 12 has a fastening pin 13, attached thereto, the latter having a head 13c with tapered surfaces 13a, 13b. In use firing of the firearm causes the breech 12 to move towards the buffer assembly and the head 13c of the fastening pin 13 to enter a recess 6b of the head 6 and strike an end face 6a thereof thus causing the head 6 to move against the spring 8. The breech 12 strikes the buffer head 2 and compresses the spring 3 which absorbs the kinetic energy of the breech. The head 13c of the pin 13 is fastened in the recess 6b of the head 6 by members 7 as shown in Fig. 2. Pressure-fluid flows from a chamber 5a in the cylinder 5 to a chamber 5b, via bores 4a in the piston 4, sealing members 11a being lifted by the passage of the fluid. The time expended in this operation is proportional to the complete absorption of the kinetic energy of the breech 12. The energy stored in the springs 3, 8 tends to return the breech to the firing position but is controlled by the pressure-fluid which passes from the chamber 5b to the chamber 5a, via radial bores 4b and an axial bore 4c formed in the piston-rod 4d. The flow is regulated by a needle 9 having a cone-shaped end 9c and which is screwably adjustable in a bore 9b formed in the piston 4. When the buffer assembly has moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 the members 7 have moved radially outwardly to release the pin 13 from the recess 6b of the head 6.
