Abstract
477,073. Gun - recoil apparatus. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (American Ordnance Corporation) Feb. 17, 1937, No. 4829. [Class 92 (i)] A hydro-pneumatic recoil apparatus for guns comprises a recuperator 45 and two cylinders 15, 18, each carrying a piston working in the other cylinder, and is provided with means for establishing communication between the cylinder 15 and the recuperator during recoil and between the recuperator and the cylinder 15 by way of the cylinder 18 during the run out. In the construction shown, the cylinder 18 is connected to the slide 12 of the gun cradle, and the cylinder 15 and the recuperator are connected to yokes 11 fixed to the gun barrel 10. A hollow piston 23 working in the cylinder 15 is formed at the end of the cylinder 18 and is fitted with a perforated disc 24 and a spring-controlled valve 25. The piston 32 working in the cylinder 18 is attached to a tubular rod 30 carried by the cylinder 15 and communicating with a conduit 41 leading to the recuperator. Longitudinal tapered grooves 33, 34 are formed in the cylinders 15, 18 respectively, and terminate short of the right-hand ends thereof. Upon recoil, oil in the cylinder 15 escapes, by way of the grooves 33, past the piston 23 into an annular chamber 36 and thence passes around a non-return valve 39, through a perforated disc 37, and finally into the recuperator to move a floating piston 45 against the pressure of a gas on the other side thereof. At the same time, the oil in the cylinder 18 escapes by way of the grooves 34 to the other side of the piston 32. During the run out, the valve 39 is closed by the oil pressure, and the oil passes through the conduit 41 and piston rod 3J and into the cylinder 18, thence flowing around the piston 32 by way of the grooves 34, through the valve 25 and disc 24 and into the cylinder 15, thus moving the barrel to the battery position. The maximum pressure of the entire system is confined to the extreme right-hand end of the cylinder 15 beyond the ends of the grooves 33.
