Abstract

280,737. Vickers, Ltd., Dawson, Sir A. T., Buckham, Sir G. T., and White, J. F. Jan. 13, 1927. Recoil apparatus.-Relates to recoil and runout apparatus of the kind in which the pneumatic recuperator does not communicate with the interior of the hydraulic recoil cylinder. According to the invention, the recuperator cylinder C and the recoil cylinder D are arranged in line one behind the other and the recoil cylinder or its piston rod, whichever moves relatively to the recuperator cylinder, is provided with a ram D<3> to compress air in the recuperator during recoil and return the gun after recoil. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the recoil cylinder D and the air-compressing ram D<2> are attached at the front end to a crosshead D<4> connected by rods D' to lugs A<1> on the breech ring of the gun and adapted to slide on guides B<1> on the cradle B. The recuperator cylinder, retained in a housing on the cradle by a nut b<3>, has glands C<2> through which the ram passes; the ram having a wall D<6> separating the liquid and air spaces. The recoil piston D<1> is connected by its rod D<2> to a lug B<2> on the cradle, and has a rearward extension F engaging a cylinder extending from the wall D<6> to control the run-out. A valve F<3> serves to regulate the run-out to suit the angle of elevation of the gun. The liquid in the recoil brake is replenished from a reservoir E on the crosshead D<4> through a passage d. In a modification, in which the recoil apparatus is arranged below the gun, the recoil cylinder is connected to the cradle, its piston rod is connected to the ram, and the run-out control rod is attached to the cradle and disposed in a bore formed in the recoil piston rod. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the recoil cylinder is detachably connected to the front end of the recuperator cylinder by bolts C<1x> and the ram D<3> is formed by a hollow extension of the recoil piston rod D<2> which is attached to the gun lug A' by a rod D<3x>. The arrangement permits of ready access to the glands C<2>, one of which may be carried by the recoil cylinder and the other by the recuperator.
