Abstract

207,411. Box, E. Jan. 5, 1923. Retort furnaces.-Domestic and other refuse, brown coal, shale and the like are passed through zones of increasing temperature in a horizontal retort by an endless conveyer the depth of the charge being controlled. The charge is fed by a toothed roller 8 and the depth regulated by an adjustable plate 10, rollers 11 serving to keep the depth uniform. An endless conveyer 12 serves to propel the charge along the retort floor and discharge it into a chamber 27<a>. Each zone is provided with separate flues each heated by its own burner 16 and the hot gases pass from the flues under the retort around the retort and escape by ports b into the top flue leading to the chimney 18.
