Overlap joints with ,packing compressed radially on assembly.-An elastic joint for ferroconcrete and other pipes is formed by two rings of rubber or other elastic material which are compressed both radially and longitudinally on to the two pipe ends by means of a retaining metal band or ring. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the edges of the metal ring 2 are provided with teeth which on being turned down compress the rings 1, 1' radially and longitudinally. The packing rings are prevented from being drawn together by means of the peripheral channel 4; the latter however may be replaced by an annular distance piece fitting within the ring 2. In order to prevent longitudinal displacement of the pipes, flanges on the ends of the pipes may be provided or as shown in Fig. 4, the edges 9 of the retaining ring may engage peripheral channels 8. In a further modification, the radial and longitudinal compressions of the packing rings are produced by forming annular depressions in the retaining ring immediately over the packing rings. The metal ring may be protected by coating with tar, varnish, enamel, or similar material and it may be entirely covered on the outside by a layer of cement &c.
