Filters having sheet filtering-materials.-In a lubricating system for internal-combustion engines in which a pump draws lubricant from the crank case or other sump through a removable filter, communication between the filter chamber and the sump is controlled by a tap which has an arm movable therewith which fouls the movable part of the filter chamber when the tap is on, so that the filter cannot be withdrawn unless the tap is closed. The filter body 5 and the tap bodv 6 are in the form of vertical barrels cast as a unit. The body 5 is closed at the top by a removable plug 8 carrying a tube 9 to which is attached a filter tube 10 with panels 11 of wire gauze. The body is closed at the bottom by a cap 24 having an outlet 12 communicating with the pump. The tap comprises a tube 15 mounted in the body 6 and having two ports 16 co-acting with passages 17 leading from the sump to the space 23 around the filter 10. A spindle 18 secured to the top of the tube 15 is journaled in a nut 19 and carries an arm 20 to which is secured a spring blade 21. When the tube 15 is turned to establish communication between the sump and the space 23, the blade 21 engages a notch 22 in the plug 8 and presses down the filter 10 against a leather or rubber washer 13 on the cap 24. To remove the filter, the arm 21 must be turned aside, thus closing the tap. The device is bolted to the side of the crank case.
